Sid Patil, the current head of data science for Twitter, got his start in the most uncommon way possible, through the card game of blackjack. What many do not know is that Patil was actually part of the group of students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that went on to play and win at blackjack.

Their story was the inspiration for the book Bringing Down the House, as well as the movie 21. The main reason Patil was able to become such a great Data Scientist was thanks to skills and theory he learned from the game.

He mentioned that “Blackjack is the only game in the casino that has a memory. What happened in the past is indicative of what will happen in the future, and this is very much like he world of analytics.”

It was with the help of this great card game that PAtil was able to improve his own skills, win some money in the process, and become the great success he is today. For those that want to learn more about Sid Patil, Twitter, and his story involving blackjack, check out the interview here.
